Te Paerata signed Te Tiriti at the Waikato Heads mission station in late March or early April 1840. This chief, or possibly another by the same name, was at Ōrākau with his daughter Ahumai and son Hitiri in 1864. He insisted on Orākau being the site for the pā built to resist the government invasion of the Waikato.

In 1840 more than 500 chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document. Ngā Tohu, when complete, will contain a biographical sketch of each signatory.
